Surviving Sleep Regressions

60 minutes (45 mins interactive teaching + 15 mins Q&A)

We think it’s safe to say that every parent becomes increasingly wary of those dreaded sleep regressions. Just when you thought you had a handle on this sleep business – your baby has started to string together some longer bouts of sleep, there’s more of a rhythm emerging in your day, there’s less overall resistance, and you are getting just a few more juicy hours of sleep for yourself – BAM! the all night wakings, struggles to initiate sleep, and complete lack of schedule coming stampeding back into your life.

In this workshop, we will be outlining for you:

  • the key developments that almost ALWAYS wreak havoc on your baby’s sleep (also known as the 4-, 8- and 15-month sleep regressions),
  • age-appropriate daily rhythms to set you and baby up for success in sleep,
  • strategies for responding to sleep resistance proactively instead of reactively,
  • how to be clear and consistent in your messaging

These stages are hard, no doubt about it. But our intention in this workshop is to reframe these sleep regressions through a deeper understanding of why they are happening in the first place so that you feel empowered and informed to meet your baby where they are at.

Why is a workshop like this important?

Sleep regressions are not all created equal. Sleep regressions are linked to major leaps in cognitive development and acquiring of new skills. The cause of one is not the same as the cause of another.

Each development is unique and each warrants its own approach (contrary to popular belief, there’s no one-size-fits-all, magic “sleep training” approach). When you know what’s going on behind the scenes, you can meet your baby where she is at in her development, and provide the gentle guidance required to get through this critical period of change.

Our aim is that you will leave this workshop knowing what to expect throughout your little one’s first 18 months of sleep development and harbouring strategies to respond to periods of sleep disruption with calm and confidence.

  • Dr. Denise Gassner (she/her)Infant and Child Sleep Expert

Denise has been studying and teaching on various aspects of behaviour for nearly two decades. She turned her attention to sleep after having her own two little humans and becoming both fascinated and perplexed by how unnatural sleep can feel in those early years. Denise has virtual clinical hours with us at West End Mamas, and she teaches essential sleep workshops for our parents.

Denise is driven to help make sleep less of a mystery for new parents and empower them to make informed decisions when it comes to healthy sleep practices that adhere to their unique parenting styles and family values. When not spilling about all things sleep, Denise can be found heading undergraduate classrooms at the University of British Columbia, dancing/running/exploring the outdoors, or hanging out with her husband, their two kids, and their pup in beautiful Squamish BC.

Denise is fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
