60 minutes (45 mins interactive teaching + 15 mins Q&A)

This workshop is offered online in live-taught, interactive format.

Sleep. We all know it’s important. We all do it every day of our lives. Yet somehow it just doesn’t come naturally for so many babies and new parents, alike.

Why can something so vital be so darn hard to come by? And how can we, as parents, help set our babies up for success in sleep so that everyone can get the rest they need and deserve?

In this workshop, Dr. Denise Gassner will outline for you:

  • How sleep is physiologically regulated at different stages of development, and how to ensure your daily rhythms are meeting your child’s sleep needs.
  • How to promote comfort and security in your baby’s sleep space so they can transition from wake to sleep with ease.
  • How to guide your baby to master their own body rather than relying on external sources when falling asleep.
  • How to be clear and consistent in your messaging so your baby knows exactly what to expect.

Denise will help you develop a plan that clearly signals the transition to sleep for your child and continues to promote positive associations with sleep time so that it remains a secure and enjoyable part of the day.

Why is sleep important?

Sleep allows your baby to actively engage with the waking world. Sleep is a fundamental component of growth and development. Your baby experiences the world while awake, but they process all that information, emotion, and behaviours that they have taken in while sleeping. Prioritizing healthy sleep is one of the best things you can do for your little one. And, let’s be honest, it’s super important for parents too!

Sleep is a learned behaviour. Though the act of actually being asleep is a natural state of the brain, the act of falling asleep is learned. Moving from being awake to being asleep is the most vulnerable transition we experience on a daily basis. Sleep itself will happen in some form eventually, but how sleep is initiated and maintained throughout the multiple sleep cycles we experience is heavily dependent on behavioural patterns and a feeling of comfort and security.

It is Denise’s intention is that you leave this workshop with clear, actionable strategies to create a safe, secure, and positive sleep space for your baby so that they can feel confident and secure each and every night.

This class is best suited for those with babies age 3 months to 18 months.

Class / Workshop Facilitators

  • Dr. Denise Gassner (she/her)Infant and Child Sleep Expert

Denise (she/her) has applied her decades of research and teaching expertise on behaviour into cracking the mystery that is baby sleep. She has a PhD in Anthropology and Biology from the University of Victoria, and turned her attention to sleep after having her own two little humans. She became fascinated (and frankly, perplexed) by how unnatural sleep can feel in those early years. Denise is driven to help make sleep less of a mystery for new parents and empower you to make informed decisions when it comes to healthy sleep practices that adhere to your unique parenting styles and family values. She doesn’t preach any specific ‘method’ to sleep training, and understands that baby sleep is both a biological need AND a learned behaviour. These two driving forces need to align for your baby to transition happily and confidently into the sleep state. Rather than giving you a prescriptive A-B-C to the perfectly sleeping baby, we are all about uncovering the why. By tapping in to understanding sleep from its core, to really appreciate the internal landscape of your baby, and to let this inform the structures and rhythms that you put in place, allows you to be proactive instead of reactive to your baby’s sleep needs.

When not spilling about all things sleep, Denise can be found heading undergraduate classrooms at the University of British Columbia, dancing/running/exploring the outdoors, or hanging out with her husband, their two kids, and their pup in beautiful Squamish, BC. Denise has virtual clinical hours with us at West End Mamas, and she teaches essential sleep workshops for our parents.

Denise is fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
